Practically every day, I’m hearing about businesses that are saying they don’t ‘need to advertise’ to get new clients, and that they are getting all of their clients from word of mouth and have done for years.

In fact, many of the business owners saying this, are even saying it as if it’s a good thing, they’re actually proud of this statement, and every time I hear a business owner say they don’t need to advertise. I know straight away, that they’re broke or making very little money in their business. They aren’t playing in the big leagues, and never will if they keep doing what they’ve always done.

If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got.

Now, having word of mouth recommendations are a good BONUS to have for your business.
However, it should absolutely under no circumstances be the primary source of income, Because relying on word of mouth to pay the bills, will simply leave you waking up with hope, desperation, and fear.

With no control over whether you’ll bring in new clients today.

All of the big businesses you aspire to be like aren’t relying on word of mouth, so why would you?

 1. Never Ending Micro Edits
'Move that left’, ‘change the blue colour to a more bluey blue’.

I’m positive that every web design / dev business has encountered clients that are never satisfied with how something looks, and it drags everything out, and never seems to end.

These types of clients also change their mind faster than the weather, and say things like ‘Can you just do this, it should be a quick job’, Although it can be difficult to identify and prevent them early on, something I’d recommend to highly reduce working with these types of people, is setting the standards.

Ensure the client knows you’re the authority from day one.
You are the one that understands conversions, and optimization better than they ever could, and they’re hiring you, because you’re the expert.

Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, Godaddy, 1&1… The list goes on, these companies have made it easier for everyday people to launch a shiny new website online, for just a few dollars a month in just a couple of days.

Let’s rewind, back in 2004 you could sell a pretty terrible website created in adobe Dreamweaver for upwards of $5,000+ with little resistance. They weren’t really optimized, link / sales tracking barely existed, aesthetics never really mattered that much either.
